Pein van Noort
Legal Director Privacy & Cybersecurity | Uber
What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?
Uber is connecting users in the online and offline world at scale, foreseeing the needs of consumers and providing opportunities for gig-workers. Building products that appreciate both their needs, and at the same time provide a safe environment, is very difficult. Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) do not always consider that the two human rights, the right to safety and privacy, sometimes clash. Accommodating both in our products is a constant challenge, which makes me proud when we succeed.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
Flexibility, adaptiveness, and a willingness to still dare to think commercially, given that fines in the privacy space keep rising.
Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on, of which you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful?
Of course, the AI that is at our disposal, or that is being introduced to the world, is rapidly evolving and counsels should make sure they stay up to date with new technologies, so that they don’t miss the boat.
