What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?
Over the past year, I played a key role in resolving a major dispute with our largest client, representing nearly half of our revenue. This required intensive negotiations and strategic legal advice to achieve a solution that balanced legal soundness with commercial viability.
I also led the integration of organisational processes to align with our new parent company, working closely with compliance and governance teams. Additionally, I implemented a legal control framework to systematically identify, manage, and monitor legal risks, enhancing the department’s efficiency and consistency.
What do you think sets you apart from other in-house counsel?
My combination of in-house, judicial, and private practice experience sets me apart. Alongside my general counsel role, I serve as a deputy judge, which keeps me legally sharp and strengthens my risk assessment capabilities. This multifaceted background enables me to approach legal matters pragmatically and align legal advice with business objectives.
I adopt a strategic mindset, viewing legal counsel as a business partner rather than just a gatekeeper. I strive to deliver solutions that create value and support the organisation’s broader goals.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
Modern in-house counsel must combine legal expertise with a process-oriented mindset. With evolving governance and compliance requirements around diversity, privacy, and sustainability, the ability to translate legal issues into operational solutions is critical.
Adaptability is equally important, especially with the rise of AI and digital transformation. In-house counsel must manage legal risks while contributing to the strategic direction of the business in a dynamic environment. Legal is not only about the license to operate but also about the license to grow.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about the intersection of ESG and legal processes. Legal departments play a pivotal role in helping companies integrate sustainability, diversity, and ethical practices into their operations.
With AI and other technological advancements reshaping the legal landscape, I believe this is an exciting time for the profession. I advocate for ethical decision-making and compliance, and I enjoy mentoring junior legal professionals to help them become responsible business leaders of the future.
