What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

We have managed mostly employment and general contract cases in the past year.

Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

I introduced a compliance rule book to capture all regulatory compliance requirements covering legal and non-legal functions. This has been the ‘single source of truth’ for the company.

As a general counsel, how do you anticipate and prepare for potential legal and regulatory challenges that may arise, particularly in light of emerging technologies and evolving business landscapes?

I keep the compliance rule book up-to-date and circulate it to internal stakeholders on a periodic basis. I believe being proactive in this way is key to being effective in my role.

What are some of the main legislative or regulatory changes that have impacted you?

First is the recent Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (Amendment) Act 2023, which brought my company (a private entity) under the regulatory oversight of the Financial Reporting Council by classifying it as a public interest entity. Secondly, is the third alteration to the Nigerian constitution, which expanded the jurisdiction of the national industrial court so that the court could now apply international best practices in labour and employment law cases.
