Formerly Statoil, Equinor is an international energy company and Norway’s largest operator that develops oil, gas, wind and solar energy in more than 30 countries worldwide. Given the importance of the energy sector in Norway economy and Equinor’s reputation within the industry, the company’s legal function is relied on heavily to ensure key transactions are executed and operations run smoothly from a legal and commercial standpoint. In 2018, Equinor’s Norwegian legal contingent has been highlighted for making contributions to the company’s debt capital market transactions and its partnership agreement with Microsoft for cloud services to be delivered from new cloud data centres in Norway. The legal department has also been fundamental in helping extend Equinor’s partnership with The Arctic Race of Norway and finalising new service contracts worth an estimated NOK 30bn to Baker Hughes Norge, Halliburton and Schlumberger Norge for integrated drilling and well services on most of the Equinor-operated fields on the Norwegian continental shelf. Team members have also been distinguished for assisting the company on keys international deals such as the acquisition of Danske Commodities for €400m to expand Equinor’s energy trading and services as well as the acquisition of a 25% interest in Brazil’s Roncador oil field, a new core market for the company. The company’s legal team has been led by the well-respected and highly experienced general counsel and senior vice president legal Hans Henrik Klouman since August 2011.
