About

Dr Matthias Geiger serves as general counsel for the Norwegian operations of global industrials giant Siemens, managing a legal department of six lawyers. Two of the team members are qualified in Norway, one is qualified in Scotland, and two are dual qualified having both Norwegian and one of English and German legal qualifications. Of the overall team, four of the lawyers represent Siemens’ core business divisions and report directly to Dr Geiger. They are Laurel Mittenthal, from the process industries and drives division, which includes the oil and gas and marine business and the digital factory division, Beate Brevik from the energy management division, process industries and drives division – the marine unit; Jacqueline Langerød in the energy management division – the subsea unit – and Philipp Øverland from the building technologies division. Vilde Aas Jakobsen is the general counsel for the separately managed Siemens Mobility Division in Norway and reports to the general counsel for Siemens Mobility in Germany. In the last three years the team has gone from success to success. One of the most significant transactions advised on by the Norwegian legal team was the BaneNor’s ERTMS tender led by Aas Jakobsen. Siemens was awarded the lineside part in a major deal for Siemens in Norway. Speaking about this success and the overall positive results the team has accomplished, Geiger identifies that the team enables ‘”ingenuity through legal excellence”… Siemens’ global claim is “ingenuity for life”, and we discussed in the team how we can support it in the best way. By doing so we came up with a common understanding of what determines legal excellence, and more concrete what we want to achieve and measure in this regard. This is not only about targets, but also about what kind of attitude and behavioural skills are helpful when supporting the business’.
