What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
The most significant transactions have been made in refinancing. Involving international teams across multiple jurisdictions, our team negotiated successfully a new syndicated loan and closed the deal within the expected timeframe.
How do you feel the pandemic has changed the world of work for in-house counsel and the function of the general counsel?
In-house counsel and its functions were required to be more strategic than ever during the pandemic since we had to make important decisions to keep the business afloat for our organisations. Utilising risk management skills, in-house lawyers mitigated risk by taking the best decisions possible to comply with both legal and commercial requirements.
What are some of the key developments – legal, geopolitical or otherwise – that have affected your business over the past year?
Given that the Covid related rules have been stricter here in Peru than other countries in the region, the pandemic adversely affected the local business especially the tourism sector. The political instability caused by the latest election made companies to operate in a high-risk environment in Peru.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
Communication technologies allowed in-house lawyers to work from home over the pandemic; and more developed technologies including AI will benefit in-house lawyers in the future by allowing them to focus on more strategic work than administrative tasks.
