What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
The past few years have been different. The businesses we advise have transformed given the change in opportunities; therefore, legal advice has been modified to respond to the new context. Besides the traditional financial transactions and products, we have faced challenges related to new variables and economic growth in many companies. At the same time, we have had many new products and opportunities for new projects requiring our legal advice. Legal work today requires greater support in structuring creative and efficient solutions that help businesses launch new innovative products and financial tools to clients. The legal department must advance in the same line to be able to add value and be an ally for our businesses.
How do you feel the pandemic has changed the world of work for in-house counsel and the function of the general counsel?
The pandemic has changed the way in-house lawyers have been providing legal advice. It has pushed us to adapt to the way different business teams were beginning to function. We are responsible for adjusting to what works for each department, suggesting ways to increase efficiency and ensuring that our legal advice is valuable and timely. Additionally, it has forced us to be more technological and improve our digital media.
What are some of the key developments – legal, geopolitical or otherwise – that have affected your business over the past year?
We have had many challenges in the financial industry. The greatest one has been the country’s political uncertainty, which has a direct impact on the overall growth of the country, as well as on the financial indicators of our institutional and retail clients. Likewise, the world situation, being also complex, has increased the challenges that we have been experiencing.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
Digital information will impact the role of in-house legal teams the most. Having all the relevant information in digital format is key to surviving in this new era. Legal teams must be able to access data from anywhere and at any time. Moreover, identifying electronic means that allow businesses to be made more structured, safe and fast is essential to generating team efficiencies.
