What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
Fabrica Peruana Eternit is making an investment of approximately €36 m for the construction of the expansion of its plant in huachipahas . The legal team has been involved in the preparation and review of the respective contracts for the development of such investment, as well as in the management before the government entities to obtain the pertinent authorisations. This represents one of the most important projects in which the company is investing from an economic and social standpoint. Huachipa is a district that has been developing so each investment generates profit in the area.
How do you feel the pandemic has changed the world of work for in-house counsel and the function of the general counsel?
The pandemic highlighted the fact that the role of an in-house lawyer is much more than ordinary legal advise, at the beginning of the pandemic we had circumstances in which we had the need to continue operating certain machines and we had to find a way to keep this in compliance with the new regulations and always taking care that our workers also mobilize with the relevant security and authorization, with regulatory changes from night to day, that an in-house lawyers has to demonstrate a high level of adaptation and resilience to change.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
Virtuality helped us continue giving support. For instance, it determined how to renew labour and commercial contracts without people moving from their home and with Peru being one of the countries with very protectionist regulations in the labor field, we were able to adapt quickly to these changes through the implementation of smart contracts and digital signatures.
