César José Canorio Vicuña
Legal manager | Mota-Engil Peru
What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
The geographical diversification of the company’s activity in other countries of the continent, specifically in Uruguay — where an important maritime infrastructure project has been underway for a few months — posed a new challenge, having to learn, understand and be ready to apply various concepts, terms and legal institutions whose development and legal regulation can be substantially different from what is practised in Peru. This is how the need arose to quickly incorporate new knowledge with the approach required by another country’s legislation to fulfil functions inherent to my job position. This learning is continuous and diverse, depending on the future of the work currently in progress and is not only theoretical but is put into practice every day.
Additionally, even though the language is the same, beginning to know and understand the idiosyncrasies, culture, customs, and way of working in another country adds additional factors to this challenge.
This learning opportunity will be replicated as the company undertakes new projects in other countries.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
I believe that the development and diffusion of Artificial Intelligence, applied to the line of business and to legal activity itself, either as a day-to-day work tool or as a substitute for some actions that can be considered routine or less complex, will contribute to speeding up in-house legal management, will allow internal processes to be automated and thus will reduce response time or even internal costs, also allowing the internal dissemination of legal concepts in a didactic and direct way (with practical application); however, it also poses the challenge of constant training for proper and responsible use of these tools.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
It is imperative and gratifying for me to be part of a ‘living entity’ with people from various professions and trades who work every day in search of common goals, allowing me to develop my career, contribute to the field that is my responsibility and learn new things from various areas of knowledge. Thus, the daily work can determine to be attending in a single day issues that pose the challenge of integrating multiple branches of law with approaches of another nature, be they technical or management, this is enriching and invaluable, it generates a virtuous circle, and it is not finite.
