What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

Returning to face-to-face work in the office has undoubtedly been one of the most important challenges I have faced in the last year. For the previous two years, we had worked from home; we had already achieved an adequate balance between work and personal life in the team (which was one of the most complex challenges we faced in the pandemic as a team). On returning to the office, we realised how much we had missed the daily interactions with co-workers, and that this cannot be replaced by any remote work tool. Although we worked well remotely, going back to the office and reconnecting with our internal customers was wonderful. Despite the fact that it was not easy to return to the face-to-face routine, we realised that we were more efficient, and more empathetic with our clients’ problems.

Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

The development of artificial intelligence in the legal practice will be something extremely interesting to witness in the coming years. We must be open to the development of new technologies, such as the automatic drafting of contracts with predetermined templates (to date, there are many companies in Peru that offer these developments). In any case, our challenge as in-house lawyers is to keep ourselves informed and constantly trained in the various technological platforms that are going to be developed, in order to enrich ourselves and evolve in parallel.

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?

The implementation of sustainability practices and policies has become a fundamental element for the responsible development of any business. The practice of in-house lawyers must be fully involved in everything that is necessary from the legal side to ensure that sustainability practices in corporations are a key element.
