What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

Since 2022 we have been developing an exploration project within the area of the license contract in which we operate by acquiring subsurface data with 3D seismic. This is a very important project for the company and the country, considering that it will be the first 3D seismic project to be carried out in Peru in the last ten years. To execute the project, it is necessary to obtain environmental certification from the Peruvian State. However, the approval of the permit has been delayed for several months due to force majeure resulting from social conflicts due to the political crisis that Peru went through at the end of 2022 and delays by the entity in charge of issuing the permit.

The delay also had a negative impact on the company’s commitments to Perupetro under the licence agreement. In this regard, we processed a force majeure request which was accepted by Perupetro. This is a clear example of one of the country’s main problems that must be addressed in order to promote private investment in the hydrocarbon sector and, in particular, in exploration activities.

Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

Technology and its impact on law and in-house lawyers is a reality that we are experiencing and with the covid-19 pandemic has forced us to change the way we work and the way we view the law. I personally believe that the technological changes we are experiencing are positive, but they must be accompanied by appropriate regulation and lawyers must adapt their skills, keep up with technology and accept the changes in order to remain effective in their roles.

The technologies that are attracting most of my attention and that which are generating the greatest impact are artificial intelligence, blockchain, smart contracts, analytics, cybersecurity and more.

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?

I believe that the balance between personal space and work is fundamental to a healthy life, to perform well at work, and to promote mental health. Personally, I am concerned about finding time to play sports, have a social life, and spend time with my family and friends.
