What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
One of the most relevant and challenging matters on a personal and professional level in 2022 was assuming the leadership of the legal, regulatory and compliance management — an objective that I had been working on since a year ago and involved overseeing areas related to legal, such as regulatory and quality, in addition to the implementation of the compliance area.
The vision I have of the areas, and in which we are working hand in hand with the entire team, is to be aligned with the objectives and needs of the business, managing risks more effectively and incorporating technological tools.
Achieving the above is not an easy task; it implies hard work because, for years and in many companies, they have seen the legal team as a stopper; to this, we must add our perspective and training as lawyers, and in my case, I must add that of the pharmaceutical chemists and engineers who are part of the team today.
Implementing compliance at Perufarma, where we handle various product categories and marketing channels, was complex. However, it allowed me to learn more about the company from a process approach, learning more about the work in each area, and I can say that today I have a more holistic vision of the business.
Looking ahead, what technological advancements do you think will most affect the role of in-house legal teams in the future?
Today, the use of technology is vital for a legal area, and there is a relatively robust portfolio of solutions created to improve the provision of legal services, ranging from solutions for monitoring judicial processes, automation of contract generation and artificial intelligence that helps you with the search for jurisprudence and information analysis, among others.
Talking about technological advancements, I believe that it is not a thing of the future, but of the present, that, if possible, we must include it in our processes and activities, since it helps us save time and effort in the search for information or even writing documents. As users, we must consider it an ally because it allows us to optimise time for analysis and relevant activities.
What is one cause, business-related or not, that you care about and why?
As a company, we must protect the business, and in my role, I do the same, managing risks in an appropriate and balanced way, presenting creative solutions to the needs of the company.
Implementing regulatory compliance in the company allows us to make visible and show the risks to which we are exposed. Compliance today is becoming more relevant in all businesses, and it is an undeniable view of an in-house lawyer.
Our function as internal lawyers is to provide strategic advice to facilitate the business, which undoubtedly requires skills and abilities to influence the decisions that each team makes within their activities and functions, In addition to knowledge of the regulations, internal processes and the company’s strategic plan.
