Karen Ames Vasquez
Vice president of legal and compliance | Sigma Safi
What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
The number one challenge has been dealing with the political uncertainty in Peru which resulted in financial instability, reducing investor’s interest in this part of the globe.
This instability is a result of intense political conflict that revealed the weak foundations of Peruvian democracy that challenge existing norms and mechanisms to survive and maintain long-term projects that can provide a wider economy.
Players in the financial market need to step up and provide alternative instruments to canalise the liquidity that our economy has, and deal with high intensity competition from foreign instruments, with less political baggage.
On the other hand, dealing with our current clients who are surviving other non-political crisis, such as high inflation, natural phenomena, pandemic, and post-pandemic crises. This framework has been our number one challenge and priority, alongside focusing on fulfilling the expectations of our investors and our clients, planning for different potential outcomes, and giving them the confidence to stay in Peru.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
An important impact of technology is the enablement of remote and hybrid teams to work together more effectively. This has been the first step in accelerating the creation of ideas and procedures that improve productivity and innovative collaboration such as contract management and workflow applications and digital manuals.
We embraced a digital and automated platform that saved time, while improving the accessibility and visibility of legal documents to the whole company, helping the egal department focus on delivering high value work.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
Being part of the change in every part of the community is something that I care about. As I work in the finance sector, I try to participate by providing our regulator with information and new ideas to promote efficient regulation in our stock market. This is especially important because of the current economic environment, with less players willing to invest in Peru.
This information also contributes to ESG measures that mitigate the effects of different industries that enter the market. As the actual players that know the behaviour of factors on the demand side are our contribution to our community.
