What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
Undoubtedly, the biggest challenge has been to close a large number of deals with existing and new clients. This allowed the company to maintain its market share despite the drop in volume. During 2022 there was a lot of pressure to sign client contracts. Despite staffing constraints, we had to deal with a high number of legal requests due to the company’s expansion and the constant search for new clients and business.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
As in-house lawyers, it is very important to start using various digital tools and legal tech that enable higher levels of accuracy and quicker responses to our clients’ requests. It is also very important for our commercial teams to have direct access on their devices to the latest models of frequent agreements. They need to be able to sign, track the status of their requests, and have access to documents among others. Also, the use of software and tools that allow efficient monitoring and management of contracts.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
As in-house counsel, I care a lot about the reputation of the company, I remain alert and on the lookout for anything that could compromise the company’s name or affect board members, shareholders, and officials in any way. Doing business is not easy, we are under pressure to hit targets, meet the budget, reduce costs, and achieve expected profits. However, the most important element is how we deliver these goals, for example, respecting the law, ethics, and conducting best practice. Environmental and safety issues are also very important to the company. We spend a lot of time establishing and verifying various controls, as one mistake could have an enormous negative impact on the company, both financially and in terms of reputation.
