Legal and compliance director | LATAM Airlines Perú
Antonio Olortegui Marky
Legal and compliance director | LATAM Airlines Perú
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
A sector as dynamic as the aeronautical industry requires that legal solutions proposed to solve different issues must be practical, precise, and always supported by national and international regulations.
Regarding management during complicated periods, the aeronautical industry has contact with different authorities, due to the regulations at air level, airport infrastructure and consumer protection, among others, as well as having a relationship with airport concessionaires and above all, the relationship with the client.
This tripartite situation (authority, concessionaire and clients) ends up making legal work more complex. Hence, the order, organisation and preparation of our team ends up being critical when facing the most complex situations, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent social crises that have occurred in the country.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
We look for people who have the necessary skills to optimally develop the position they occupy, regardless, in any case, of external issues to their skills and abilities. In that sense, our team is made up of different personalities, who with their unique perspectives, allow us to create a work team focused on meeting our objectives with a broad and flexible vision.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Our company has sought and succeeded in making our own business activity generate value through our sustainability and social support programs, such as “Avión Solidario” and “Segundo vuelo”.
Through the first programme, we seek to provide free transportation to people in need, or who require support to fulfil a dream because they do not have the economic means to make it happen on their own.
Similarly, our second program allows us to give a second use and a new life to the company’s clothing (uniform fabrics in good condition, airplane seats, among others) in order to contribute to the recycling of one of the most polluting industries such as textiles. These fabrics are donated to communities of artisans in our country to be reused as new garments that can marketed.
Our role in these and other programmes is to assess the feasibility of establishing these initiatives within the permitted regulations, in addition to complying, at the time of implementing the programs, with our high standards of compliance.
