Supporting Makro Peru, an international brand of warehouse clubs and a cash and carry business, the company’s legal team is made up by key team members with strong legal skills, as well as the critical capacity to prevent risk and react under pressure in matters related to contracts and land acquisition. Made up of three lawyers and 14 administrative coordinators in stores, the legal team supports the business in offering support with a corporate and strategic perspective to protect the interest of different stakeholders, and help the business departments to align its objectives with local regulations and corporate policies. Directly linked to Makro Peru’s growth, the legal team is involved in projects to acquire land for new stores and various business projects. These include a customer relationship management project, in which the team advises on matters of consumer protection, data privacy, unfair competition and publicity. ‘The most important change to the legal team was the mandate to the legal manager of undertaking ethics and compliance roles for Makro Peru. It is the largest challenge because it will ensure that every employee of Makro Peru needs to understand and follow ethics and compliance guidelines’, says legal manager Chrys León. Some notable transactions the legal team has worked on recently includes the investment in a public project under the mechanism known as “Public Works Tax Deduction” consisting of the road improvement of the streets in El Tambo Huancayo – Junín for the amount of S/2.35m.
