What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

In 2023, we successfully concluded bulk sales of real estate assets (REOs) and non-performing loans (NPLs) in two separate transactions within the Spanish Branch. Additionally, we completed the first NPL sale in Portugal to a Securitization Vehicle. Furthermore, we conducted a comprehensive legal and compliance risk assessment in line with BPCE group guidelines. We also refined and implemented several improvements on our origination side, with particular focus on our app specifically designed for brokers.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

I would say three things are very important, and in no particular order. The first is being able to listen a lot and, as the in-house lawyer, thinking that you are part of the team and focusing on the productive side of every discussion. Secondly, having good triage skills – as in a field hospital – and being able to pass this on to your team so that they also quickly understand business and company priorities. Finally, trying to build a team with rich skill sets and fostering true cooperation and camaraderie among your team members, as this builds a sense of purpose.

How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?

The best approach is to listen to the business counterparts and try to dissect their questions and concerns as part of the strategy to mitigate legal risks. They can actually teach you a lot and very quickly, so try to gather their insights and concerns in mitigating some legal risks. Avoid the ‘silo approach’ and whenever possible, work physically close to or with them, as this builds rapport and enhances communication within the company.

Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?

I am passionate about the countryside and forestry. As city dwellers, we have little to no understanding of farming, cattle, or forestry. Recently, I renovated a very small forest with local species. Since some trees will only come to fruition in 40 or more years, I hope to pass this passion on to my children as well.
