What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
The most significant cases the legal team have been involved in since I joined BA last year have been the M&A ones, because of the obvious impact they have on the growth of BA Group. It is truly amazing to be involved in an M&A transaction, even if for a very small part of it, and to observe how everyone in the company puts all their energy and effort into it. It is definitely not easy managing such transactions, especially the ones which involve people and companies from different countries and even from different continents – as it happened in the Mexico transaction – and to put everything together on short deadlines but, in the end, it is very rewarding.
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
I do not see it as an innovation exactly, but every time I find ways to standardize procedures, I try to implement them, not only to simplify and make my work more efficient, but also and specially to improve the flow of communication between departments inside the company. It can be very time consuming to be revising the same type of documents or contracts or asking and providing the same questions and answers regarding the same issues over and over again, when we can instead just establish and provide some guidelines or standard questions and answers to the same type of issues. This standardization process is one of the main goals of our legal team and as BA Group keeps growing, it is of great importance to keep working on it to eliminate some inefficiencies and procedural differences that can be overcome within the different group companies.
