Joining the firm in 2003, Amy Shapiro became a Cleary Gottlieb partner in 2012. Her practice focuses on corporate and financial transactions, with a particular emphasis on the representation of private equity firms (and their portfolio companies) in financing matters, corporate clients on the financing of major M&A transactions, and financial sponsors in fund and management company financings. She has played a prominent role in many of the firm’s most high-profile representations in Latin America, including numerous significant matters in Mexico. Shapiro has represented some of the largest companies in the country, including repeat clients Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua, which she advised on in its 2010 restructuring and subsequent refinancing transactions, and América Móvil, notably on the financing of the acquisition of Dutch telephony services company KPN, the group’s first significant investment in Europe. More recently, she was part of the Cleary team advising Mexico’s leading glass manufacturer Vitro on a 2015 agreement to sell its glass containers division to Owens-Illinois for $2.1bn, a sale which included five manufacturing plants in Mexico, one in Bolivia and associated distribution assets in the US. Other recent matters include acting as counsel to Credit Suisse in its role as lead arranger in a senior secured loan facility to paper production company, Bio Pappel, disbursed in consecutive tranches of $105m and MXN$2.3bn over two closing dates.
