Doris Rodríguez has a transactional practice concentrated on a broad range of corporate, finance, energy and real estate transactions in a variety of sectors and with a focus on Latin America. Since 2013, she has served as US counsel to Energía del Caribe and its affiliates in a variety of US and transnational matters regarding the development of a natural gas power plant in Mexico that will provide electricity to offtakers in both Mexico and Guatemala. She also currently represents a US company regarding Mexico’s auctions for electricity and clean air certificates and regularly advises a Mexican family office in respect of various corporate matters. Additionally, as lead international counsel, Rodríguez represented bidders in one of Mexico’s bidding rounds for oil-and-gas properties. She has counselled the Inter-American Development Bank in lending transactions to banks in Latin America, and represents two of only a few financial institutions in Mexico that are still ultimately owned by Mexican individuals in a variety of lending transactions to borrowers (secured and unsecured). She is a native Spanish speaker with a multi-faceted practice in Latin America that includes negotiations, document preparation and review in both English and Spanish, and working with and coordinating foreign local counsel. Since 2017, her standout matters in Mexico have included representing a US client on its participation in the Mexican auctions for the sale and purchase of electricity and clean energy certificates. The proposal being put forth is for a generation plant that will be built in the US (on the Texas-side of the border) with the interconnector being on the Mexican side of the border. Among other things, Rodríguez is advising on the bidding rules, the qualification process and the PPA. She has also represented a Mexican family office that owns several companies in connection with the restructuring of its assets after the death of the patriarch. The assets consist of accounts located in numerous financial institutions held by diverse companies. The reorganisation involves various companies and accounts located internationally, including Mexico, the United States and Europe. She is also taking into consideration NAFTA investment provisions related to this matter. Outside of Mexico, she has acted for the developer and sponsor of a wind project and a solar project in Chile, and was lead counsel to Sinopec on its $2.48bn purchase of Occidental Petroleum’s upstream business in Argentina. She also assisted an international drilling company with the sale of its Venezuelan business, including rigs, drilling contracts and the transfer of employees. This work reflects a growing Latin America focus at Hunton Andrews Kurth. On April 2, 2018, Hunton & Williams and Andrews Kurth Kenyon finalised their merger to form a new firm with more than 1,000 lawyers, making it a top 50 US legal practice by headcount. The firm’s new Latin America team will have more than 50 lawyers, most of whom are fluent in either Spanish or Portuguese.
