Gregory Tan is global head of Shearman & Sterling’s global project development and finance group. He has a significant focus on Latin America, especially Mexico and Central America, where he has previously advised on headline deals such as representing the borrowers and sponsors in connection with the $235m financing for the development, construction and operation of two solar photovoltaic projects in Mexico – Solem I and Solem II, 150 MWac and140MWac solar photovoltaic power plants, respectively. Tan is regarded as ‘a consensus builder’ who is ‘one of those people that will roll with the punches and look for creative solutions’. Gas pipelines are another area of expertise: Tan has acted for a number of sponsors including Energy Transfer Partners on the $1.2bn financing of the Waha-San Elizario and Waha-Presidio pipelines, both of which carry gas for Mexico’s National Electricity Commission (CFE); and for Carso Gasoducto Norte, as borrower, on the $535m financing of a 630km pipeline from Chihuahua to Sonora. While Tan is particularly well-known for acquiring Mexican energy assets, he also has deep experience in the hospitality, leisure and gaming industries, and has handled matters involving Africa and Asia as well as the Americas.
