Senior legal counsel | Nano Digital Home Loans
Could you tell us a bit about your significant successes in your role?
Since joining Nano, I have supported the technology/platform part of the business which saw our first customer go live in July this year. In order to get our platform up and running for a third party, this involved re-negotiating our current contracts and entering into several new agreements to allow for this new way of working and negotiating an MSA and SOW for a bank to now digitally approve home loans in under 10 minutes. We did this in and got all contracts completed in time for go live for the client in an a very short turnaround, of approximately 3 months.
In your opinion, what are the qualities and skills needed to form a strong legal team?
Communication and trust are so important in a legal team. You need to be able to pick up where someone left off, clearly communicate risks to the business and explain what the agreement terms mean for the business and communicate to others in your team to make sure all risk is accounted for, as conversations can happen that you might not be across. Trust is also very important. The business needs to be able to trust your advice and your team needs to trust that you have got things covered if you say you do. We are all so busy with our own roles that you need to know you can rely on each other.
What is the biggest risk to your industry or organisation and how are you contributing to prepare your organisation for this?
I think being in the fintech space that supports home loan origination, it’s a very tricky space to manage right now, given the constant increase in interest rates. We have an amazing product at Nano and can help our customers improve customer experience and make approving lending so much faster saving our customers time and money.
What challenges have you overcome to get to the position you are in today?
I haven’t had the most traditional career path and so had to fight just a little bit harder to prove I am worth taking a chance on, as it’s not easy to look at my CV and easily see what I am capable of. I have worked across media, government, space and fintech and taken on a new challenge or industry in each role I have moved into, and I loved it. It has meant I have had a steep learning curve and been a sole legal counsel only six years into my career. In saying that, I appreciate every opportunity I have had to get to where I am now and be the lawyer I am today.
