Associate general counsel | Nearmap
Ellie Harding
Associate general counsel | Nearmap
Could you tell us a bit about your significant successes in your role?
Our legal team supports the other departments to ensure Nearmap’s interests are protected in engagements and to collaborate on different areas of the business. For example, we are involved in negotiating bespoke terms when customers request changes to our contracts. We recently had a negotiation with a government customer which went very well and will be used as the basis for other sales to different departments of that customer. This will streamline future deals and save significant time, while ensuring both parties are happy with the contract terms. A key success for me has been getting promoted to associate general counsel, which is a very exciting progression, and I am pleased to have extra responsibilities within the company’s legal team.
In your opinion, what are the qualities and skills needed to form a strong legal team?
A good legal function requires strong relationships with the other teams in the company, in order to meet business objectives. It also requires the ability to prioritise competing tasks and juggle multiple deadlines, so that all stakeholders’ needs are met in a timely and efficient manner.
What challenges have you overcome to get to the position you are in today?
The move from a law firm to an in-house legal role has been challenging but rewarding. It requires me to think differently and obtain a much deeper understanding of the commercial aspects of the business. There was a steep learning curve initially, where I was required to quickly learn about Nearmap products, teams and business goals. As I continue to develop this knowledge, it enables me to advocate more effectively for Nearmap’s interests and to understand the risks we need to protect against.
