Head of legal and compliance - Mexico | Panasonic Mexico
Could you tell us a bit about your significant successes in your role?
Panasonic Mexico is a big and complex enterprise with several business units in operation which are all very different from one another. The main challenge which the legal team overcame was having to quickly understand the individual needs of each specific company and business unit that operates in Mexico. This required much interaction with each business unit’s leadership, receptivity to fully understand their risks and needs as well as much research to provide effective legal services, but when we succeeded in doing so, this was a huge accomplishment.
In your opinion, what are the qualities and skills needed to form a strong legal team?
You must be able to learn and collaborate with cross functional leaders if you want to successfully implement legal or compliance initiatives. You must also be aware of your team member’s potential, trust their skills and let them thrive without getting in the way.
What is the biggest risk to your industry or organisation and how are you contributing to prepare your organisation for this?
It is key to remain up-to-date on the regulatory reforms which will most likely affect your specific industry, and then be ready to act accordingly. This has been especially important recently, as, in Mexico, we have suffered major regulatory changes. It is also very important to work closely with external counsels to define any legal strategy to minimise risks.
