Nancy Martínez Rodríguez
Senior legal manager | El Palacio de Hierro
Could you tell us a bit about your significant successes in your role?
I have successfully consolidated and led our legal department through great challenges, from the coordination of corporate governance and market issues, negotiation and closing of key contracts with large corporations, as well as the internal changes towards optimal development and efficient review of legal documents. Also, I have always sought to implement new processes and add technology to legal matters, to make each process more efficient and have us always at a forefront position.
In your opinion, what are the qualities and skills needed to form a strong legal team?
I believe that to form a great legal team, not only knowledge and experience is necessary, but also an ability to know how to set an example, to work alongside your colleagues and build together a solid legal team that is capable of generating trusting relations with business partners, that is tenacious and resolute when making quick decisions at decisive moments, that can prevent legal risks in a timely manner and resolve conflicts effectively. As a leader, you must be able to convey to your team the goals and objectives of the company so that, together with the organisation, all the necessary steps are taken to achieve them, as it is not just about being in charge of a team, but also about creating a solid pillar that can legally support the company, under any circumstance.
What is the biggest risk to your industry or organisation and how are you contributing to prepare your organisation for this?
As a retail company, we constantly face great risks that can range from the breach of contracts, problems with the operation, industrial property issues, among others. My contribution to the constant challenges of the industry has always been the anticipation of legal risks, through solid contracts that can sustain long-term business relationships. Good negotiation and communication skills are crucial, particularly with business partners and suppliers, as we avoid conflicts but remain prepared to solve them, if necessary, through strategies that provide protection to the company.
