How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
During the period of crisis, it is our best chance to put our better skills on. Adaptability is top priority for me during these periods. Changing the plan, adjusting the targets and redefining the strategy. Also, communication and feedback are important for legal head to remain linked to company business goals and management strategy. Understanding the business environment, the customers and the company is the key to success.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
The company counsel can make a valuable contribution to the business and culture of the organisation and have an impact on the bottom line. As sustainability issues increasingly create legal, regulatory and reputational risk, law departments are expected to play a key role. For the legal counsel, the responsibilities boil down to two things: to align the company’s business goals, strategies, and processes with sustainability responsibilities and to protect the organisation from regulatory penalties and reputational damages.
To achieve these, the company counsel is conducting an in-depth risk assessment exercise to identify potential risks associated with neglecting sustainability and highlight the financial consequences of such risks, including regulatory fines, lawsuits, and damage to the company’s reputation; also is developing a global sustainability framework that outlines the company’s overarching sustainability principles while allowing flexibility to accommodate local regulations and cultural differences.
