Focus on…My career

I am a best of breed general counsel and a consummate specialist generalist with in-depth and detailed knowledge of the legal, commercial and business areas that impacts on modern businesses. I am a strategic and tactical executive who participates in all spheres of business, including being a member of boards, (management) executive committees and various sub-committees. I am experienced in interacting with all levels of stakeholders including presidential, ministerial, regulatory and shareholders.

I act as the trusted advisor to the council, management executive committee, vice chancellor, executive and senior management. I intentionally balance my office with compassion, humility and a focus to being grounded. I have 25 years of varied and in-depth legal and business management experience. I spent the last 17 years as general counsel/legal officer to some truly impressive companies and institutions, where I headed up legal departments (sometimes including governance, risk and compliance functions) of inter alia the University of Johannesburg, the Sail Group, Unitrans, Barloworld Logistics and Chlor-Alkali.

My foundations are in commercial law, corporate law and business. My areas of specialisation include contracting, commercial, corporate, mergers, acquisitions, competition, governance, risk, compliance, ethics, litigation, education law and public law. I have been entrenched in industries such as logistics, supply chain, procurement, chemical, mining, manufacturing, financial and higher education.

I thrive in the management of high-performance teams and large impactful projects. I excel at the implementation and management of modern legal, governance, risk and compliance departments, whilst taking into consideration the exigencies of the business/institution in doing so; and delivering results that are sound in business and law. This is tempered with the question: but is it also right?

I am driven with a passion for law and business with a focus to leaving a positive and lasting impact on society.
