Managing during periods of instability and crises requires assertiveness and decisiveness, which I prioritise in my approach. Legal and Compliance functions are critical enablers of the company’s overall strategy and must operate as such. This is achieved by continuously challenging the prevalent “siloed” mentality often associated with highly skilled professionals. Ensuring all team members have a clear understanding of the broader organisational strategy and their role in facilitating it fosters cohesion and a commercial, solution-driven mindset essential for achieving the best outcomes for the business.

What are the main cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?

Largest transactions in 2024-2025:

Project Finance Transactions (FY2024): R900m

Group Restructuring (2024/2025): R3bn (including new share subscriptions, refinancing of existing debt, and overall operational restructure)

Large-Scale Customer Contracts (2024/2025): R5bn in annual revenue

Facilitating and assisting Leo Satellite providers with market entry

How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?

This is most effectively achieved through organisational structure. By making the General Counsel—who holds an Exco-level role—responsible for ESG and Compliance in addition to Legal, as is the case with myself, these considerations are naturally integrated into decision-making. This structure ensures equal focus on legal, compliance, and ESG at the executive level.
