How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Managing the Legal function is by its very nature a collaborative effort. By collaborating with key stakeholders, one ensures that legal considerations are integrated into decision-making processes. This involves identifying potential legal challenges, and developing contingency plans that align with our strategy and troubleshooting during times of crises. The fast-paced environment of a legal department requires individuals adaptable to change and quick to action.

How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?

I am very fortunate to form part of a very knowledgeable and passionate ESG execution and implementation team. As general counsel and together with our ESG team we strive to embed ESG principles into the very fabric of our business. Using technology to aid in the reporting and tracking of our goals, has proved indispensable to the process. We have also found that ongoing Training in ESG, purpose and targets has been an important element in all areas and at all levels in the Company.

How do you manage and motivate your legal team to ensure high performance and professional growth?

High performance requires well-rested and energised staff. We prioritise a supportive and dynamic work environment that acknowledges the fast-paced nature of our industry and departement. I am well aware that the legal landscape can be both challenging and stressful and requires the team to consistently bring their A-Game.

Firstly, I encourage open communication about mental health: we must all feel free to discuss challenges without judgement. This, in fact, is company culture fostered at all levels of the business. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions, both formal and informal, assist with this and allow us to address any concerns promptly and collaboratively.

I consistently encourage the team to make use of the amazing counselling service offered to our employees and to take part in the various lifestyle workshops the company offers.

I also emphasise the importance of work-life balance, offering flexible work arrangements, when possible, and constantly encouraging employees to make use of days off and other initiatives run by the company to promote mental and physical wellbeing.
