With a hugely capable, 263 persons legal team in Southeast Asia (and 2,492 globally when including legal offshore service centres and contract management team), Accenture is a company that prizes the benefits that a top-quality in-house legal function can provide, and the continued expansion of the team’s abilities is a high priority for the global management consultancy powerhouse. In Southeast Asia, as in the rest of the world, Accenture’s in-house legal department adopts a highly sophisticated team structure that balances flexibility with decisiveness, something that is especially important with such a large team. The most senior individuals in Southeast Asia are Thierry Lintermans (complex contracting lead for growth markets), Chad Kynan De Souza (Asia Pacific complex contracting lead) and Melissa Koh (ASEAN and Greater China complex contracting lead). Lintermans provided some further insight into the most important projects undertaken by the team over recent months: ‘Project Moonshot is a global initiative that focuses on creating differentiated scope and optimised staffing for our contracting teams, with the goal of delivering fit-for-purpose deal support and market relevant expertise in leading edge offerings as Accenture pivots quickly to new industrial technologies. Accenture legal teams have also striven to increase speed to contract with simplified legal templates and standing approvals for commonly escalated positions with streamlined legal risk management tools for each country’. In terms of innovation, the company has shown once again that they are at the very forefront of legal technology. ‘Accenture legal has introduced two automated robots as part of our suite of legal tools’, Lintermans explains, ‘and we have also just piloted a new AI-powered platform which leverages big data analytics and machine learning technologies to provide actionable insights from past contracts, and have established a new standard, digital and centralised process called for client teams to engage with legal for contract creation and review’. The Accenture legal team is therefore a highly proficient unit; being well-staffed with talented operators from top to bottom. It is also at the cutting edge of technologies which give it an edge when dealing with challenges in its day-to-day operations of supporting the business. This has allowed it to take the lead on a number of transactions in recent months, including the signing of ‘a three-and-a-half year infused management model deal to maximise value for the client’s procurement process valued at over US$50m, a ten-year award to set-up and run a shared services centre valued at US$150m’, and ‘a five-year opportunity to provide application services, infrastructure hosting and end-user computing support to a large resources client valued at US$100m’.
