BP Singapore
BP Singapore, a wholly owned subsidiary of BP, has a remit that covers Asia Pacific, the Middle East and the east coast of Africa, and is primarily involved with the marketing and trading of crude oil and petroleum, as well as the provision of derivative and risk management products in relation to this. This is an extremely lucrative avenue for the company, and BP Singapore had revenues of over US$25bn in calendar year 2016. Led by Kelly Mahood, who has been with the company for more than six years after practicing at a Magic Circle firm in London, the team works closely with the commercial teams in the product benches they support, prioritising a collaborative approach that maximises the abilities of the individuals that make up the company. This is crucial, as the nature of the trading business means the team is required to provide a rapid response on issues and exercise critical commercial as well as legal judgement along with this. With work ranging from the financing of and investments in major petrochemical projects, to trading contracts and shipping disputes stretching from South Africa to South Korea, the team has developed extensive knowledge of the commercial operations of the petroleum marketing and trading business. It combines this with strong technical skills developed at large international law firms and, as such, the team is not solely a legal function but a significant value addition to the business as a whole.
