The legal team covering bottling operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Myanmar for US multinational beverages company Coca-Cola has been described by nominators as ‘cutting edge’ and always fighting to find new innovative ways to support the business practices. The team is led by legal director Saikat Sarkar who ‘finds solutions and keeps the business going in a compliant manner’ and holds a Law Degree from Calcutta University and a diploma from King’s College London in competition law. He had the following to say about his department: ‘As a team, we are perceived to be an approachable team that provides sound legal advice for the business and is a key player for the business to win in the market. We have also made development of the individual capabilities of the team a strong focus’. Other key members of the team include legal counsel Andrew Liew, legal executive, Nadia Shafleena Shafii, and legal executive Kristine Thong. Together they cover a wide range of issues, from strategic analysis and handling greenfield projects, drafting and reviewing various contract types and advising on competition law queries, labelling and halal-related issues, corporate level project matters, insurance matters, dispute resolutions, litigations, claims and personal data privacy matters among many others. On the team’s recent achievements, Sarkar shares the following: ‘We have been involved in greenfield projects such as the purchase of land and expansion of our bottling capabilities in Malaysia. The legal team played a major role in the project where we are involved in the acquisition of land, conducting due diligence, legal risk management, drafting and negotiating agreements for contractors to complete civil works and indirect services for the new warehouse. Through this expansion, Coca-Cola Bottlers Malaysia expects to create big opportunities for direct and indirect jobs in companies supporting the suppliers, logistics, small and medium enterprise as well as Malaysian companies that support the business supply chain and retailers’.
