Downstream solar energy specialist Conergy’s in-house legal team has made a major contribution to the success of the company’s endeavours since beginning work in earnest in 2016; prior to this, the company’s legal work was undertaken by external law firms. Maree Myerscough, general counsel for Asia Pacific (and a direct report to the CEO) leads the team, supported ably by senior legal counsel Martijn van Bemmel. Now a ‘trusted and proactive partner to the business’, the Conergy in-house legal team has multiple successfully completed transactions to look back on. Myerscough mentions the team’s work on: ‘the project financing, project development and engineering, procurement and construction for the 13 MWp (AC) solar photovoltaic plant + 5MWh battery storage system in Lakeland, Australia; the EPC arrangements and project development support for the 25.881p MW solar photovoltaic power generation facility in Ichinoseki, Japan; and the acquisition of Conergy Asia by new private equity shareholders’. The establishment of a dedicated in-house legal team has proven to be a positive move for the company, as Myerscough comments: ‘Since establishing our in-house legal team around two years ago, there has been a heightened awareness throughout Conergy’s business regarding the legal risks affecting our business. Our legal team’s role has evolved as our commercial teams and senior management have recognised the value that can be gained from having trusted in-house legal counsel with transactional experience provide advice and insights on the various challenges facing the company’.
