Logistics powerhouse Linfox has a seven-person Asian in-house legal team headquartered in Bangkok, and is responsible for ten countries in the region as well as for possessing the relevant knowledge applicable for operating in these diverse locations. James Evans is director of legal and external affairs for Asia and leads the team, while senior legal counsel Prichaporn Limaksorn is responsible for general legal advice in Southeast Asia, as is junior legal counsel Siricha Kiatrabil. Evans details the company’s rapid growth in recent months, mirrored by the legal team: ‘In the last three years the business has doubled in revenue’, he explains, ‘with significant expansion in both its long standing markets and new geographies, and the volume and complexity of work has increased significantly as the legal team has been tasked with a more pro-active and integrated approach’. As for what this entails, Evans says the workload has been varied, but has consisted to a large extent of ‘joint ventures, large scale customer contracts, labour litigation and a joint development programme’. The team believes in finding a solution to the business’s problems by spending time and effort with the right people within the business. ‘The legal team knows that simply saying “no” or “cannot” is not part of what we do’, Evans explains. ‘Instead, we are pragmatic and creative in developing ways our business can legally operate, and work together as a team with our logistics operations, HR and finance departments to collectively develop solutions and strategies for the business to thrive’.
