The legal team is headed by senior vice president – corporate development, general counsel, and company secretary Wei-Pin Choo who is now supported by a team of eight other lawyers and four non-lawyers after investing and recruiting in high-quality personnel. As Choo explains, ‘the business has grown exponentially with entry into new markets and segments in the last two years (such as mobile and software and services), and we have had to both broaden and deepen the team’s collective expertise by bringing on-board individuals with relevant expertise and experience. For example, four members of the team have previously served as general counsel, partners and company secretaries in their previous roles. We have also invested in technology such as an online database system for trademark and patent portfolio management’. Describing the remit and qualities of his department, Choo says that ‘the Razer legal team provides legal support in various areas including M&A, corporate finance, general corporate and commercial, litigation, intellectual property, corporate governance and corporate secretarial matters. Our attorneys also have specific prior experience in relevant industries such as consumer technology, banking, mobile telecommunications, software and digital payments’. The qualities of the team have been exemplified on a number of key projects they were instrumental on such as the company’s successful IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the 2017 acquisition of Nextbit (which facilitated Razer’s entry into the mobile space with the launch of the Razer Phone) and the 2016 acquisition of the iconic audio company THX which enabled Razer’s growth in the audio entertainment sector. With the highly regarded head of intellectual property Soon Hui Ngoi, the team also resolved various complex trademark issues which allowed it to sell its products without restriction in various jurisdictions. The team was then able to assist in the launch of Razer’s virtual credits platform (zGold) in the EU, the United States and Asia.
