The four-person Scotiabank global banking and markets legal team is empowered to work as independently as possible, making best use of the individual team members’ specific talents and specialisms and coming together to accomplish shared goals. Stanley Park, managing director and head of Asia Pacific legal, leads the team and explains a number of ways in which the team has successfully supported its business over recent months, including working on customs duties disputes and coordinating the response to updated cybersecurity regulations. He also illustrates the ethos that the team operates by: ‘Our main goal is to support the client-oriented focus of the business within the context of a risk-averse control framework. The ethos of the legal team is primarily a matter of attitude, particularly a continuous attention to what efforts can be made to support the business objectives while at the same time maintaining sight of the overall risk profile of the bank. Perhaps most importantly, the ability to align our own goals and perspectives with those of the business depends on keen understanding of the products or transactions and solid, meaningful personal relationships’.
