How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

In times of instability or crisis, I focus on prioritizing, being adaptable, and working closely with all departments to ensure that legal considerations are part of every key decision.

For example, some time ago, in response to a significant industry-wide supply chain issue, we proactively integrated legal into a digital ‘war room’ setting with business teams to swiftly address major contractual challenges. By working directly alongside the business, in real-time, we reached the right balance between long-term legal protection and the flexibility needed to address immediate concerns.

Additionally, my international experience has given me insights into the practical nuances of different legal and cultural environments, allowing me to tailor strategies that meet local regulations while aligning with global business goals.

Even under pressure, by fostering close online cross-departmental collaboration, we ensure that our legal strategy remains up to date and can support broader goals of innovation, growth, and sustainability. This approach helps us stay resilient and move forward in a changing environment.

What are the main cases or transactions that you have been involved in recently?

One of my most rewarding recent transactions involved supporting some cross-border key technology projects for Spain and Portugal (Network Core and Business Applications), where I helped with the final objective of enhancing the necessary Infrastructure to foster Innovation and Digital Transformation.

Furthermore, I have been recently involved in multiple international Technology contracts, focusing on Software Licensing and overseeing the deployment of Technology solutions in line with applicable legal and contractual requirements.

This required navigating complex regulatory compliance issues, adapting systems, and negotiating contracts to meet both local and international standards, always with a strong focus on delivering value to the customer.

How have you integrated technology into your legal processes, and what impact has this had on efficiency and compliance?

Technology has played a key role in transforming the legal department. Over the years, I’ve been involved in implementing innovative legal tech solutions, from legacy databases and ERP modules to modern tools like AI-powered contract automation and risk management systems. I have also collaborated closely with internal teams to enhance the integration of legal tech tools, optimizing workflows and promoting the department’s adaptability to the business’s changing requirements.

All these advancements have significantly boosted efficiency along the way, allowing us to focus more on strategic, high-value tasks. This shift has also enhanced closer collaboration with business teams, ensuring that the legal function aligns with broader business objectives.

Technological improvements have fortified the legal role and assisted us in transitioning from a reactive to a proactive team, fostering innovation and preserving competitiveness in a fast-paced evolving market.

What do you see as the major legal challenges for businesses in Spain over the next five years, and how are you preparing to address them?

Looking ahead, the main legal challenges in Spain will likely come from the increasing complexity of Data laws, AI regulations, Information and Cybersecurity, Sustainability concerns, and Global Trade (all interconnected). With tighter GDPR enforcement, new AI laws, and evolving EU regulations, businesses will need to stay proactive in anticipating and managing compliance and contracts.

Additionally, the growing focus on ESG regulations will push companies to demonstrate strong ethical governance and sustainable practices.

My goal is to create a flexible legal structure that prepares for regulatory shifts, ensuring the business stays compliant but also well-positioned to capitalize on new opportunities. This forward-thinking strategy enables us to tackle obstacles, supports business expansion, and enhances the company’s long-term objectives, ensuring we remain resilient and competitive.
