Bernardino Muñiz Calaf is a distinguished legal professional with over two decades of experience in the field of law, specialising in procedural and insolvency matters. His career is marked by a blend of academic excellence, practical legal expertise, and significant contributions to legal scholarship.
Bernardino began his academic journey at the University of Oviedo, where he earned his Law degree. He furthered his education with a Doctorate in Law, focusing on civil appeals at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. His academic pursuits were complemented by research stints at the Institute for Procedural Law at the University of Cologne, Germany, where he deepened his understanding of international legal frameworks.
Professionally, Bernardino has held several key positions that highlight his versatility and leadership in the legal domain. He currently serves as the General Counsel for Spain and Head of Legal for International Sales at ArcelorMittal, a global leader in steel manufacturing. In his various roles, he oversees legal matters related to international sales, capital expenditures (in particular in the context of decarbonisation programs), and a vast array of topics related to the legal challenges related to steel production in Spain, ensuring compliance and strategic alignment with corporate goals and managing a team of highly trained and engaged lawyers.
Before joining ArcelorMittal, Bernardino was a practicing litigator (both before courts and arbitral tribunals) and throughout his career he has kept a remarkable academic profile. He has been for over a decade a faculty member at Universidad Pontificia Comillas (ICADE), where he lectures on on EU and Cross-Border Insolvency Law. His teaching is informed by his academic research and practical experience, making him a respected figure among students and peers alike.
Bernardino’s contributions to legal scholarship are substantial. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters on various aspects of procedural law insolvency law and product liability. His work has been published in prestigious journals and legal periodicals, including Insol World, Produkthaftung international, and La Ley.
In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Bernardino has been actively involved in various legal and professional organisations. He has served on the editorial board of Insol World and has been a member of the advisory council at the Centro de Innovación del Derecho (CID-ICADE).
