Santiago González Pérez
Director and legal counsel | American Express
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
I always try to very pragmatic during instability and crises. Financial Services is a heavily regulated environment, so resilience is embedded within the company strategy.
What are the main cases or transactions that you have been involved in recently?
Spain in American Express is our EU Headquarters. American Express has significantly grown his presence here (e.g. we triplicated the number of Amex colleagues over the past 3-4 years). American Express sold this year Accertify. I supported the selling of the company from an employment law perspective which included a Spanish subsidiary.
What role does the legal department play in promoting and ensuring corporate social responsibility in your organisation
I think the legal department plays a key role as the other business units of the company do.
What do you see as the major legal challenges for businesses in Spain over the next five years, and how are you preparing to address them?
Within the EU and especially Spain, we are dealing with an hyper-regulated work environment. That means, the legal department becomes even more important not just to ensure compliance but also to help the business to achieve the company objectives.
