The Solna-headquartered NCC Group is a construction firm that develops and builds residential and commercial properties, industrial facilities and public buildings, roads, civil engineering structures and other types of infrastructure. Conducting its operations primarily in the Nordic region, the firm also offers input materials used in construction, such as aggregates and asphalt, and conducts paving and road services. Håkan Broman is one of the organisations key figures, and is highly-recommended for going above and beyond the usual remit expected of a senior in-house lawyer. As the acting CEO, a position he held due to the abrupt departure of the previous CEO, Broman was an important figure in the stabilisation and steadying efforts of the company in 2017. In response to the difficult circumstances, he was behind the creation of a “turnaround” programme that is currently in play that he states ‘holds strategic and operational managerial activities throughout the entire organisation, with emphasised focus on business management and operational efficiency’. The program leads to increased operational efficiency, with ‘significantly lowered cost levels throughout the NCC Group’. In a more legal context, Broman has served the NCC Group for almost a decade as its general counsel, presiding over the group legal affairs function and all of the services it provides. The team contains approximately 40 in-house counsel, risk managers and senior commercial consultants, with a task to ‘ensure best business support to the CEO, the business areas, the board of directors, shareholders, the stock exchange and other stakeholders at all times’. Since NCC has established a captive insurance company, insuring all operations of NCC, Broman also acts as chairman of the board of NCC Insurance. The position also comes with membership of the executive management group and as secretary to the board of directors of the NCC Group, ensuring his advice is heard and appreciated at the most senior levels of the business. Broman also highlights his leadership of the task force that developed and implemented NCC´s compliance system, known as “The Compass”. Beginning his in-house legal career in 1996 at ABB/DaimlerChrysler Transportation, Broman first joined NCC in its International Projects subsidiary in 2000, undertaking the general counsel and senior vice president role for seven years, before being appointed as the general counsel and senior vice president of NCC Property Development in 2007. In January 2009 he began as general counsel and executive vice president of the NCC Group, and at this time he became the acting CEO of the organisation in November 2017, before returning to the general counsel role in May 2018. In addition to his outstanding support to the NCC Group, Broman has frequently been engaged as a tutor or speaker at seminars and conferences on subjects such as contract and risk management, construction law, cross-cultural assessments, business ethics, value creation contribution of legal affairs, codes of conduct, compliance and business management.
