Mikael Sundström
Senior vice president and general counsel | Scania
Mikael Sundström is the current senior vice president and general counsel of Scania, having first joined the Swedish commercial vehicles manufacturer in 2004. As an industry leading transport company that produces a range of products including trucks and buses, as well as industrial and maritime engines, the company has almost 50,000 employees based in approximately 100 countries. Its research and development operations mostly take place in Sweden, but it has production, sales and operations centres all over the world, and is under the umbrella of the Volkswagen Truck & Bus company. As head of the legal department, Sundström oversees all legal matters for the company be it commercial contracts, labour policy or compliance in the multi-jurisdictional regulations it is subject to. One recent example of the expansion of the firm during Sundström’s time at Scania has been its recent contract success to provide public transport in Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou. The group has signed a memorandum with the government of Burkina Faso to establish a bus and coach service with 460 buses and 90 coaches. Sundström became a member of the board of directors of the Sweden China Trade Council in 2006, and he previously worked in the legal department of Ericsson and was its chief legal officer between 1994 and 1997.
