Bonnier Broadcasting is one of the Nordic region’s biggest television companies and is leading the development of video content and digitalisation of the television industry. Led by general counsel Ulrika Jensen, the legal department is formed by talented individuals, including seven senior legal counsel, one data protection officer, one regulatory affairs specialist, one rights coordinator and one paralegal. ‘I strongly believe in self-leadership and delegating responsibilities to team members. This means a wide responsibility for the team members, and when you trust in your team they grow, develop and find new ways of working. To be able to be successful with this structure I put a lot of effort into the recruitment process to find the most qualified talents, not only from a legal expertise perspective but also, and maybe more importantly, to find those who are aligned with the team’s purpose and therefore a perfect match for the legal team and the company’, says Jensen. The transformation within the media landscape moves quickly, and the legal department needs to constantly adapt to fast changes in the business by being part of the core business and close to the decision-making process. ‘[Over] the years we have worked very hard and strategically to achieve a position as a real business partner instead of being “the last resort”. Today each team member is responsible for one or more of the company’s areas and thus has become a specialist in that area. Moreover, together the legal team has a unique holistic knowledge of the whole business area, which has become an important and successful tool in our work to be a real business partner’. Recently the team has contributed to important transactions, such as the acquisition of Bonnier Broadcasting by Telia Company as well as the extensive GDPR implementation throughout the company. Summing up her team ethos, Jensen says, ‘[we have a] strong team spirit with a positive and friendly atmosphere.
