What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
In our third year of our monitorship under a non-prosecution agreement with the DoJ and a cease-and-desist-order with the SEC, we achieved a certification of the effectiveness of our compliance and financial controls by our monitor. We are now awaiting a confirmation thereof by the US Government and a release of abovementioned agreements.
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
A change of reporting line of all in-house counsel centrally into the global legal function and the creation of one global legal budget for all legal expenses both for internal and external counsel — No cost. Super-effective to make sure the (long-term) interests of the global public company remains a priority in decision-making.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
Affinity with financial KPI’s — revenue, margin, cash-flow — a willingness and ability to challenge business case assumptions and a proactive and preventive mindset.
