What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

Following the announcement of CSL group’s USD$ 12 bn bid to acquire the Vifor Pharma group in December 2021, this year was dominated by ‘getting the deal through’. This included approval by antitrust authorities worldwide, once closing was completed in August 2022 to prepare for integration and start implementation. This also included keeping the employees motivated throughout the acquisition period and, after that, securing the business.

The European Commission announced in June 2022 its formal investigation against Vifor Pharma for alleged abuse of a dominant position in iv iron products. Following the investigation against Teva for Copaxone, this is the Commission’s second antitrust investigation for the new theory of harm (disparagement). However, our case differs from past cases, especially the ones in France, as our case deals with originator-originator marketing activities.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

Some of the qualities needed to be successful as an in-house lawyer in the industry are the following: Judgment, dealing with complex, significant matters that cut across legal and related areas, and leadership.
