How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?   
 
Having worked my way up at Sandoz from a junior lawyer to the general counsel and chief compliance officer, working across a broad swath of business units and divisions, I have gained a profound understanding of our business and strategy. It is this knowledge that enables true business partnering and exceptional legal counselling. As a leader, I encourage and empower my team to apply the same approach by taking an active role in shaping our business, working hand-in-hand with all parts of our organisation, and crafting innovative legal strategies to bring to life our aspiration of pioneering access for patients.   
 
This profound understanding of our business and strategy means that my team is prepared for whatever comes its way in times of instability and is trusted and empowered to take action. Over the last 18 months, my team has been called upon to undertake an incredible load of additional legal and compliance work as part of a complex spinoff from our former parent company, all while continuing the work necessary to keep the Sandoz business thriving. The spinoff was a resounding success, fuelled by my team’s exceptional knowledge of the current and future needs of the Sandoz organisation.  
 
What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?  
 
Generative AI seems to have taken the legal profession by storm, and we have been closely following the opportunities it presents for automating repetitive activities. This would allow our legal teams to focus on complex and strategic work, improve contract review and analysis, identify risks, and generally increase efficiency and reduce costs. At the same time, we have been prioritising getting the basics right by staying up to date and building on existing legal technologies that are already integral to the profession. These include legal research platforms, case and contract management software, eDiscovery and legal hold tools, eBilling solutions, and many more.   
 
We collaborate closely with our technology team to stay current on emerging legal and business technologies, focusing on continuous learning and professional development. We also gain valuable insights at industry conferences and through legal technology associations and organisations.
