How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises is pivotal to safeguarding the organisation’s interests and ensuring its resilience. A robust legal strategy must be closely aligned with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s success and resilience, with attention to supporting key business objectives while mitigating resulting legal risks.
Alignment and managing legal aspects become even more paramount in periods of instability or crises. We approach this challenge with a multi-faceted strategy, building mainly on three key pillars – preparation, reactivity, and skills.
Preparation is key to enabling the legal team to react swiftly in the event of instability or crises. In the event of a crisis, an immediate response is critical, and flexibility is crucial. Empowering the team to engage in new approaches allows for swift reactions. For all of this, it is especially important to have the right team members with the right mindset and skills. Curiosity and willingness to continuously evaluate, improve, and learn are all a must.
We believe that uncertainty can be embraced by the legal team as an opportunity for learning and improvement rather than a mere threat. By staying flexible and agile, yet anticipating risks and staying abreast of developments, legal teams can significantly contribute not only to the mitigation of legal risks but also to the overall strategic objectives and long-term success of the organisation.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Salt is committed to operating a responsible and sustainable business that meets the demands of our stakeholders and society, and we have made this an organisation-wide priority. Our legal and governance team plays a key role in maintaining our values of diligence and integrity.
At the top management level, we have defined new policies and refined existing ones with a strong focus on sustainability. We regularly conduct materiality assessments, reassessing and improving our priorities to embed sustainability practices into our core business operations. In my role, I oversee legal and regulatory compliance, as well as HR, Health and Safety, Security, and Facility management and I am also acting as the company secretary. All areas are directly involved in and impacted by our sustainability efforts, and the topic remains at the forefront of my activities.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
Diversity and inclusion are topics very close to my heart. They are one of my priorities for my teams as well as my contribution to the organisation as a member of the top leadership team, particularly when shaping strategies, policies, and living our company culture. We have implemented policies and launched initiatives, for example, to showcase female talents in the telecommunications sector, and I am proud to head a team with members combining diverse backgrounds and speaking 15 different languages among a little over 20 people.
As a female leader in a mainly male-dominated sector, I feel particularly responsible for supporting and empowering young female talent and helping them grow and develop. It is one of my priorities to ensure that women and diverse groups have an equitable seat at the table and that their voices are heard.
