How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

The legal function, including compliance, has two main functions. First, it must ensure that the license’s prerequisites to operate the company and its divisions are fulfilled. Secondly – and this is specifically true for innovation-driven companies – it must provide legal solutions and support for the business to achieve its goals.

Hence, the targets of the business must be an integral part of the targets of the legal function. It is the responsibility of the head of law to decide on the legal strategy and the allocation of resources to implement the strategy, based on the overall risk scenarios and business goals.

What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?

Without doubt, the main impact on our profession will come from the emergence of GenAI and how we make best use of this new technology. Given we are still at an early stage with this technology, it will be paramount for the legal profession to quickly learn how to work with it, and how we can use the new technology to best serve the businesses we support.

As GenAI comes with risks (such as copyright or data privacy risks), it will be up to us to determine with the business, which level of risks may be taken – and also show which opportunities the new technology will bring in terms of services, opportunities and efficiency gains.

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are core elements of our company values. They are reflected in our team in terms of gender (50-50); ages (from Baby Boomer to Generation Z); beliefs and nationalities (five different nationalities for 14 team members). To enable a good working DE&I environment, trust and mutual respect are pivotal requirements.
