About

Cooperative retail and wholesale company Coop is one of the largest retailers in Switzerland, with over 2,000 shops and more than 54,000 employees in the country. Appointed “world’s most sustainable retailer” in 2011, Coop’s focus on ethical sourcing and sustainable practices places heavy demands on its legal team. In particular, the team has won praise for its involvement in environmental management recycling regulations. Given Coop’s close network of food and retail affiliates, the legal team dedicates a lot of effort to brand management. The company also sells products from Max Havelaar Fairtrade and the legal team has taken on considerable responsibility in the partnership of these socio-environmentally responsible brands. In 2005, Coop became one of the retailers to introduce self-checkout facilities to Switzerland through its Passabene system. The legal team helped spearhead this innovation and were fundamental to its smooth inception and efficiency, a success they replicated with the subsequent introduction of an Apple iPhone App allowing customers to scan items.
