In 2015 Swiss cement giant Holcim merged with its French rival Lafarge to form one of the largest building materials and aggregates companies in the world. The merged entity is based in Switzerland with central business functions divided between Zurich and Paris. Xavier Dedullen, former group general counsel and head of compliance at Holcim, was selected as the merged entity’s chief legal representative and directly reports to new CEO Eric Olsen. Dedullen now acts as group general counsel and chief compliance officer at LafargeHolcim. The company is faced with the declining commodity and oil prices, reduced capital flows, pressure on currencies, political upheavals and regulatory matters central to the synergies of the two companies. Combining the operations of the two companies provided an advantage in all business segments globally as well as allowing them to increase their competitive advantage. The legal teams of the two companies have had an important role to play in both the merger and the subsequent integration.
