Philip Morris International’s (PMI) Illicit Trade Strategies and Prevention (ITS&P) Law team consists of five lawyers and one legal assistant. On top of its day-to-day legal support, the team works to master techniques outside of the legal curriculum and embrace innovation. Headed by assistant general counsel Margaret Simpson, the ITS&P team is responsible for the overall legal support to anti-illicit trade initiatives of PMI, including developing policy recommendations and prosecuting intellectual property infringement cases. The team is well-integrated with its business colleagues, who treat the fight against illicit trade as one of the top priorities in line with PMI’s wider direction for protecting its tobacco products across Europe. ‘As a part of the PMI legal department we are responsible for supporting the business in their day-to-day activities, but our team also does strategic thinking, supporting long term initiatives in a very broad sense. We often design solutions from the business perspective, not only legal’ says Andrzej Kolwas, senior counsel.
